Baba Ali, Sean P
Fourth Sounds and Elephant is pleased to invite you to “This House”, a live performance and installation by Baba Ali (Babatunde Doherty) at Elephant West, with DJ sets by Sean P and guests.
The show is named after Baba’s debut studio album, written in London shortly after he completed his MFA degree at Goldsmiths in 2018. The album fuses elements of funk, blues, and post-punk with lyrics that drift between social commentary and the surreal.
This performance will feature live renditions of unreleased material from the album, weaved together by interludes of instrumental abstraction and spoken free verse. Under the guise Baba Ali, Babatunde utilises face paint and attire to embody his performative alter-persona. This is both a nod to the provocative force of 70s glam and the literary notion of the court jester.
The show will also include an installation of four new works by Babatunde Doherty that belong to a series newly titled Nation, No Nation. These works first materialised in 2013 as colour studies, when Babatunde began experimenting with unconventional approaches to fabric dyeing as a means of engaging with the indigenous textile traditions of Nigeria, his parents’ native country.
Sean P is a London-based DJ and studio engineer, known for his encyclopaedic knowledge of boogie, house and other forms of dance music. In 2000 he compiled the seminal music album “Disco Not Disco” focused on underground music of the post-disco era, including tracks by Yoko Ono, Arthur Russell and Liquid Liquid. He’s since released several other important compilations and has been featured on Boiler Room.
