Cindy Sherman, Untitled #216, 1989

Happy birthday to the unparalleled doyenne of disguise, Cindy Sherman, who turns 67 today! Here’s an image from her series History Portraits (first exhibited in 1990), which saw the American artist reimagine paintings from the art historical canon—think Raphael, Caravaggio, Ingres et al. “Wittily combining costumes, prosthetic devices and make-up, Sherman’s portraits are by no means faithful mirrors of the original works,” explains the National Gallery of Victoria, “but instead bring into question the distortion that such historical works undergo through functions of time and memory.”
