Imma Barrera, Joshua and the Sky, 2019

Happy Earth Day! As the world wakes up to the horrifying human impact on our planet, Barcelona-born photographer Imma Barrera focuses on the effects of light pollution, which prevents millions of people from experiencing the wonders of the night sky. Throughout her former career as a scientist Barrera photographed the world around her, as a way of storytelling, as much as collecting data. This incredible image of the Milky Way was taken at Joshua Tree National Park in California, and forms part of the Under the Night Sky series, which was shortlisted for the Sony World Photography Awards. The exhibition is currently on show at Somerset House, London, until 6 May.
