JoAnn Verburg, First Day Back in Italy (Pisa), 1998

Sundays are for snacking and napping. This excellent image was taken by American photographer JoAnn Verburg and depicts her husband, the poet Jim Moore, alongside a delicious-looking array of nibbles. The photo appears in writer Lou Stoppard’s feature for the current issue of Elephant, exploring what happens when photographers shoot their romantic partners. “Verburg has described this image as a photograph about jet lag, noting ‘I find that in-between state of being, so tired that you can’t keep your eyes open, to be very provocative and very interesting, like that moment of dusk that’s both day and night’,” Stoppard explains of this particular scene.
