Saul Bass, Vertigo Poster, 1958

When it comes to making movie posters, few graphic designers come close to the late great Saul Bass, himself an Oscar-winning filmmaker, who produced some of the most iconic film posters and title sequences of the 20th century. Alfred Hitchcock, that master of suspense, called upon Bass’s skills for a number of his movies, resulting in this much-acclaimed poster for his 1958 thriller Vertigo. This saw Bass place the outline of the film’s stars at the centre of a dizzying geometric pattern that hints at the story’s physical and mental discombobulation.
