Shikeith, O’ My Body, Make of Me Always a Man Who Questions! 2020
In the new issue of Elephant, British-Nigerian writer, researcher and curator Emmanuel Balogun picks at the threads that bind the lives of modern Black men through a compelling selection of photographs—including this one by Shikeith—that explore sexuality, violence, loneliness and vulnerability. “Throughout Shikeith’s work, the Black American psyche is expressed through states of meditation, prayer, and ecstasy, as images of the Black male body persist,” Balogun writes. “[This work] features an anonymous man, drenched in sweat with his back arched, in a process of resurrection. [Shikeith] positions Black male hands as a communal force of life and regeneration.” Purchase a copy of Elephant 48 here to discover more.
