Life and death, past and present, man and nature, all meet in one big freeze at LA’s brand new Frieze art fair. This work by Adrián Villar Rojas, shown with Marian Goodman Gallery, calls to mind still lifes and ideas of luxury and decay, as well as our impact on the environment, squashing and squeezing the earth’s beautiful resources into one claustrophobic space. It’s difficult to view this work and not imagine the smell, emanating from disembodied sea-creature claws, halved papaya and shrivelled grapes. The fair runs for the rest of the weekend—and excess is most certainly the order of the day.
