Today is World Mosquito Day, a worldwide event to raise awareness about the devastating effect of diseases spread by female mosquitoes, including Zika, dengue, yellow fever and malaria.
Dengue fever is one of the most deadly mosquito-borne diseases in the world—half the world’s population is now at risk of infection. For the Wellcome Photography Prize 2019, Adrienne Suprenant, a social and environmental photojournalist, was commissioned to tell the story of the disease, travelling to areas in the world where it continues to ravage communities. Dengue Fever – Falling Between the Cracks explores the practical challenges of managing the spread of the prevalent disease and the attempts being made to tackle it in Bangladesh, Fiji, Brazil and Reunion island.
