Some Tuesday tranquility, courtesy of the 19th-century German-American painter Albert Bierstadt. Best known for his beguiling landscape paintings of the American west, in this instance Bierstadt turned his gaze to the Matterhorn, a towering, near-symmetric pyramidal peak in the Swiss Alps—one of Bierstadt ‘s favourite European locations. The work is typical of the artist’s extraordinary command of natural light, and ability to capture nature at its most majestic and awe-inspiring.
