Albert Frey, Frey House II, 1964

Would you let a boulder into your bedroom? The late modern architect Albert Frey made a strong case for the motion in his brilliant design for Frey House II, his second home located in Palm Springs, and completed in 1964. Dubbed “crazy” by the Palm Springs City Hall, the compact structure, made from concrete, steel, glass and corrugated aluminium, was intended to disrupt the surrounding environment as little as possible. This large rock, which protrudes into the bedroom-slash-living area, is one of the house’s most renowned elements, an acknowledgement by Frey of “our role within nature”, according to Palm Springs Art Museum.
