Alberta Whittle, the author of this pertinent collage, is representing Scotland at this year’s Venice Biennale. “Whittle’s work is constructed from layers and dualities,” wrote Emily Gosling in an interview with Whittle for Elephant’s SS21 issue. “It is campy (brash colours, sassy send ups of ‘internet’ tropes) and serious in its themes (colonialism, xenophobia, sickness). It is light and dark; sombre and playful; folkloric and meme-ish.” It also has a strong connection to dreams, making it an apt choice for the 2022 biennale’s theme “The Milk of Dreams”.
