Alex Da Carte, A Husband Pillow, 2019

Is it a dinosaur? Is it a snake? No! It’s a husband pillow… Whatever that is. Reminicsent of Santoine de Saint Exupery’s snake who swallowed an elephant, this cosy-looking fella is part of US artist Alex Da Corte’s solo show, Marigolds, at Karma Gallery in New York. Carefree in his slumbers as he recovers from his considerable gluttony, Da Corte’s mysterious beastie looks kind of like something you could find in the children’s section of an Ikea store. Bright-coloured, plush and distinctly lacking any of those dangerous swallow-able parts, he is ready to be snuggled by a three-year old with baked beans all round her mouth, and hands still covered in poster paint. Alex Da Corte’s exhibition Marigolds is showing at Karma Gallery in New York until 3 November.
