Alex Prager, Compulsion, 3:14pm, Pacific Ocean, 2012

A Monday mood… This scene, depicting seemingly shipwrecked passengers adrift in a deep green sea, is one of many striking tableaux dreamed up by the American photographer Alex Prager. Acting as the director of her singularly stylish visual world, Prager constructs dramatic set-ups that are at once familiar and disquieting, before capturing them on camera. Frequently populated by colourful characters and fanciful set design, Prager’s pictures could easily be mistaken for film stills, and sometimes they are: the LA native is also filmmaker, a cap she dons with equal aplomb.
