Alexander Calder, Toilet Paper Holder, c. 1952

American artist Alexander Calder is most readily associated with his captivating kinetic sculptures, but he was also a keen DIY creator of items for the home. After he and his wife moved to Roxbury, Connecticut in 1933, where they set about renovating a dilapidated farm house, Calder was inspired to dream up some truly memorable domestic objects to enliven his new dwelling. These included a toaster, chairs, ashtrays and this extremely artful toilet paper holder in the shape of a hand, putting its middle finger to a less conventional use.
