Alexander McQueen, Jigsaw Top, 2000

One for the puzzle-lovers, this artful jigsaw top is the handiwork of British designer Alexander McQueen, who dreamed it up as part of his Spring/Summer 2001 ready-to-wear collection, Voss. The S/S01 show was one of McQueen’s most memorable, constructed, in the words of the V&A, to “resemble a padded cell in a psychiatric hospital with white tiled floors and walls formed from surveillance mirrors.” McQueen, who battled with mental illness throughout his life, based the collection on historic depictions of madness and incarceration, the half-completed jigsaw perhaps a reference to the sedentary entertainment offered to in-patients.
