A tight embrace—as depicted by lauded Ukrainian artist Alexander Roytburd, whose diverse practice spans painting, installation, video, and performance art. Roytburd was one of the founders of Ukrainian transavantgarde, a movement established in the 1980s, championing a style that embraces elements of naive art, expressionism and baroque—to powerful and theatrical effect. Roytburd’s paintings are large in scale, and defined by their sculptural brushstrokes and merging of what Art Next Gallery describes as “political irony, mythological illusion and philosophical and humanitarian discourse”.
