Trans writer, photographer and publisher Amos Mac took this picture, Tuck Imitates Madonna, ten years ago. Since then, a lot has changed in terms of trans visibility in visual culture, something Mac has been part of for ten years. Established the same year he shot this picture, he was founding editor of Original Plumbing, the only magazine in the US dedicated to trans male culture. Since then Mac has also worked on award-winning shows like Transparent, and the film Billy Tipton (2019) the feature-length biopic about the trans male jazz musician. On the International Day of Transgender Visbility, which coincides with Mothering Sunday in the UK, we, like Mac, celebrate all those whose stories have been lost, forgotten and erased, and look forward to a brighter future led by a new generation giving trans and queer people the presence they need, and deserve.
