Amrita Sher-Gil, Sleep, 1933

A snoozy start to the week by visionary artist Amrita Sher-Gil. Born in Budapest to a Hungarian mother and Sikh father, Sher-Gil spent most of her childhood in India before moving to Paris to study at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts aged sixteen. Her work from this period evokes her classical training, but also saw her explore “ways of representing the non-western body”, in the words of Tate, as seen in this elegant, richly coloured portrait of her sister Indira, made in 1933. Tragically, Sher-Gil died at the age of 28, but her extraordinary paintings continue to make an impact to this day.
