Ana Benaroya, Reservation For Two Please, 2019

Friday night plans… This pert painting is the handiwork of New Jersey-born artist Ana Benaroya, one of Elephant’s recently selected artists to watch, whose colourful work centres on heavily stylised figures, usually living the good life. “[Benaroya’s] bodies swell and morph,” notes Louise Benson, “taking on alternative forms with exaggerated breasts and muscles. The power dynamics of gender norms are taken apart in the process, [offering] a queer perspective on the body as it transforms.” Having only completed her MFA at Yale last year, and with New York and LA exhibitions already under her belt, Benaroya’s star is most certainly on the rise.
