Since the start of Russia’s war on Ukraine, Ukrainian artist Anastasia Nekypila has been channeling what writer Liza Premiyak describes as “the pain of her country’s displacement”, as well as a deep love for her homeland, into her work. Her powerful series Wake Up, the War Has Begun (in which this work features) “reproduces images seen on the news, set against a black background, to show the suffering and loss experienced by Ukrainians,” explains Premiyak, and was created entirely on an iPad.
