Anthony Iacono, Hanger (Study), 2017

A Monday morning wake-up call… This image, along with various others by Anthony Iacono, featured in Elephant Issue 38, where we spotlit a selection of artists dedicated to “recasting masculinity” through their work. The acclaimed New York artist’s flat, sleekly stylised pieces (comprised of overlaid paint, ink, and watercolour cutouts) centre on single male figures, their face or head often obscured from view, adding to the overall sense of detachment. As seen here, however, “puncturing the order are moments of kink and rebellion, laced with humour”—from experimentation with a clothes hanger to a man firmly clasping a rose between his buttocks. Playful and celebratory in equal measure.
