A Thursday pick-me-up, courtesy of rising Japanese-Brazilian painter Asuka Anastacia Ogawa. Her large-scale works are whimsical and enigmatic, depicting “androgynous children in chimerical dreamscapes… formed from solid fields of colour and flat picture planes”, in the words of her gallery, Blum and Poe, which is currently hosting an exhibition of the artist’s latest work in Tokyo. Ogawa says her practice is driven by a childlike curiosity and impulsiveness, describing the results as “a deeply personal conduit to a primal place inside, a spiritual channel to her Japanese and Afro-Brazilian ancestral lineage”.
