A moment of self-reflection, captured by the American painter Aubrey Levinthal, whose evocative still life and figurative works celebrate the beauty of the everyday. Food, flowers and plants abound, and yet many of her people-populated works possess an air of introspection or quiet melancholy. Her compositions pay homage to art historical tradition, while her technique (which involves scraping, sanding and glazing the paintings’ surfaces) adds a distinctly modern element of mystery and motion. New Yorkers can catch a new exhibition of Levinthal’s work at the Monya Rowe Gallery, until 31 October.
