Ayşe Erkmen, On Water, 2017

A Moses moment, courtesy of Turkish artist Ayşe Erkmen and her temporary installation On Water. The sculpture debuted in Münster, Germany in 2017 as part of the city’s decennial public art project, Skulptur Projekte, and served as a bridge between the north side of Münster’s harbour with its promenade and cafes, and the south: a gritty, industrial area. The installation is a meditation on the divide between work and play, and an attempt to better connect one to the other. Made from shipping containers and a grid of steel beams and grates, and located beneath the water’s surface, the bridge is hard to spot (especially at ground level) making it appear as though those crossing are walking on water.
