This haunting image is a still from War of Perception, a film by Hong Kong-born artist Bo Choy. “Bo’s… works navigate the experience of the present, through the poetics of memories, tales and reflections of the past, knitted together with speculations on the future,” writes Sophie Williamson in a 2021 article for Elephant. And War of Perception is no exception. It was made during the unfolding events of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests throughout 2019 and 2020, Williamson explains, and presents “an elongated temporal reality of the city”; one where “elders roam their childhood hangouts, ghosts linger and memories resurface”, as future anxieties loom.
