The Breese Little Prize for Art Criticism is now in its eleventh edition. The prize searches for new and original voices in contemporary art criticism and is open to those over 21 years old. Art Quarters Press are the main sponsor, with Laurence King Publishing and none other than Elephant providing support.
Last year’s winner, Gary Zhexi Zhang – winning for his terrific review of Ed Adkins at the Serpentine – has just enjoyed a full feature in the new issue of Elephant about the rise (and subsequent fall from grace) of Post-Internet Art. The winner of this edition will also be invited to write a commission for Elephant and will ideally show potential for further development via print and book projects.
This year’s prize is £1000 and confirmed judges include FT Art Editor Jan Dalley and Paul Hobson, Director of Modern Art Oxford. Winners will receive personal feedback from the judges and the entries must be kept short and punchy — no more than 750 words that focus on an exhibition that has taken place in the last six months, either here or abroad. Applicants must have no more than three articles previously published in print.
In Breese Little’s own words; ‘we favour criticism which privileges accessibility without losing analytical bite, which does not mystify with art jargon or compromise content, and which maintains intellectual rigour, strong visual analysis and demonstrates a thorough engagement with contemporary art in general.’
All submissions should be sent to artcriticism@breeselittle.com
Volume XI’s deadline has been extended to 18 September 2015.
