A Tuesday tussle by Brittney Leeanne Williams. The Chicago-based artist is known for “her deeply emotive and expressive works that burst with vivid colour”, in the words of Rebecca Fulleylove in an archive feature on Williams for Elephant. As seen here, red female figures feature frequently in Williams’ work as symbols of the experiences, emotions and memories of women. Each of her paintings starts as a feeling, Williams tells Fulleylove—“Let’s say frustration, and then I’ll think a lot about how frustration would posture itself in the body, how it would take shape in a body”—and expands from there.
