Nothing, it seems, is off-limits for Cary Kwok. The sexualized male figure is a recurrent theme in the Hong Kong-born artist’s work, and he has turned his lascivious eye on everyone from Popeye to Shrek to, well, even Santa Claus himself. In the spirit of the festive season, his distinctive portrait of Old Saint Nick takes an unusual look at the evasive nighttime bearer of gifts, reimagining him in an altogether more private moment. Rendered in Kwok’s characteristic ballpoint pen, the drawing captures the artist’s fascination with heroes and pop-cultural archetypes, as well as his humorous, off-kilter obsessions and interest in sexual fantasy.
