American artist Chris Engman is a master of illusion. He is most frequently found creating large-scale indoor installations, using huge printed photographs, that give visitors the impression they’ve been transported into a forest, rocky mountain pass or desert without ever leaving the gallery space. In this instance, however, he’s covered a section of arid landscape with a panelled billboard bearing a true-to-size photograph of the very same slice of earth and sky it obscures—to powerful, perception-warping effect.
