Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Surrounded Islands Biscayne Bay, Greater Miami, Florida, 1980–1983

Remembering the reigning king and queen of wrapping, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, on their shared birthday—both would have been 87 today! What’s your favourite of their artworks? We love this 1983 project, which saw them surround various islands in Greater Miami with pink polypropylene fabric. “For two weeks, Surrounded Islands, spreading over 11.3 km (seven miles), was seen, approached and enjoyed by the public, from the causeways, the land, the water and the air,” explains their website. “The luminous pink of the shiny fabric was in harmony with the tropical vegetation of the uninhabited verdant islands, the light of the Miami sky and the colours of the shallow waters of Biscayne Bay.”
