To coincide with the London Festival of Architecture, the Dulwich Picture Gallery opens its second pavilion today. This joyously colourful, geometrically patterned structure is designed by architect duo Pricegore (Dingle Price and Alex Gore) and Yinka Ilori, a London-based artist of Nigerian heritage, who specializes in contemporary furniture design that incorporates Nigerian traditions. The Colour Palace celebrates a fusion of European and African cultural heritage, predominantly inspired by the Dutch wax prints found at a Lagos market, which are also a common sight across “Little Lagos” in nearby Peckham. As well as being a welcoming beacon, the structure is also a functioning shelter, and will host a range of events, from neon drawing classes to supper clubs, throughout the summer, as well as offering panoramic views of the gallery’s gardens, thanks to bright red straddle stones that elevate the entire pavilion.
