Constantin Brâncuși, The Kiss, 1907

Intimacy etched in stone. This limestone sculpture is the work of the Modernist sculptor Constantin Brâncuși. It is typical of the Romanian artist’s simple, geometric style, and marked an important milestone in his journey towards abstraction (so much so that he made multiple versions of it). This evocative photograph of the intertwined lovers, meanwhile, was captured by the Romanian image-maker Dan Er. Grigorescu in 1967, exactly sixty years after The Kiss’s creation.
