A Monday pause for thought. This beautiful painting was made by the American artist Derek Fordjour, using multiple layers of newspaper and cardboard to achieve its collaged effect. Although he’s sitting serenely, this painting’s muscular protagonist is most likely an athlete, as hinted at by his patterned vest and Fordjour’s well-known preoccupation with sports players and figures in motion. “Surely there are parallels between art and sport in society,” the artist told Emily Steer for Elephant’s latest issue. “They both have significant social, cultural and economic value, but no utility.
