Timed in line with the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, Art after Stonewall, 1969-1989 opens next week at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art in New York, and is “the first major exhibition to examine the impact of the LGBTQ civil-rights movement on the art world”. The show contains over 150 works of art and relevant materials, which a key focus on openly LGBTQ artists including Vaginal Davis, Michela Griffo, Lyle Ashton Harris, David Hockney, Greer Lankton, Robert Mapplethorpe and Catherine Opie. Artists such as Judy Chicago and Diane Arbus, who have engaged with emerging queer subcultures, are also included. The exhibition runs until 21 July.
