Chinese-Canadian artist Dominique Fung paints sumptuous and surreal works that subtly confront the exoticisation of Asian women, as well as the decontextualisation of Asian artefacts, throughout Western art history. In this work, A Chinese Dignitary Pregnant After Eating Cake, Chung upends the “oriental” woman stereotype—nude and reclining à la Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres—bestowing the central ceramic figure with a post-cake paunch and discarded spectacles to wonderfully satirical effect.
