Happy birthday to Dorothea Tanning, born on this day in 1910. The American artist may be best known for her turbulent, gutsy painting practice, but she also worked in writing, sculpture and printmaking. The Menil Collection in Texas is currently showing a selection of her graphic works, created between 1950 and 2001. The prints and illustrated books show Tanning’s varied style, which occasionally veered towards abstraction. “Her ambiguously erotic embracing figures are the most recognizable,” says the collection. “Tanning’s highly personal work addresses universal human emotions and experiences of ecstasy, elation, anxiety, and obsession.”
