All UK based artists graduated B.A or above since and including 2010, and whose primary medium is painting or drawing, are invited to apply for the Griffin Art Prize 2017 by submitting images of 4 recent works, artists statement and CV. Entry is £15 per application. Applicants must be graduates and a UK resident or hold a valid work visa with right to stay in the UK during the whole of 2018.

Long list and short list exhibition

The panel of judges will make an initial selection of 20 artists from the digital submission.  These long list artists will be announced on August 29th 2017 and their work featured on the Griffin Gallery website.

The Griffin Art Prize long list artists will be invited to send in one piece of work to the Studio Building. The judges will convene to view the works and select a short list of 10 artists. The announcement of the short list will be made on September 29th 2017 on the Griffin Gallery website.

Short listed artists will be invited to exhibit their works at the Griffin Gallery in November 2017. A visit will be arranged to the Studio Building on October 10th to view Griffin Gallery, artists’ studios and other facilities. During this visit, it will be possible to discuss any considerations regarding the selection and hanging of works for exhibition. It is strongly recommended that exhibited works are the ones originally submitted, are for sale and remain available until December 2017. 

Griffin Art Prize 2017

The judges will select the winner of the Griffin Art Prize 2017 from the shortlist exhibition. The winner will be announced at the private view in Griffin Gallery on 1st November 2016.

Prize expectations

The winner must be able to take up the prize during 2018 and exhibit new work at the Griffin Art Prize 2018 shortlist exhibition in November 2018. 

The competition is operated by ColArt International Holdings Ltd (“ColArt”), The Studio Building, 21 Evesham Street, London, W11 4AJ, England.

The competition is open to any UK based artist whose primary activity is painting or drawing and has graduated B.A, M.A or Ph.D. in Fine Art or a related degree from a recognized institution since and including 2010. Employees (and their families) of ColArt and anyone connected with the competition are not eligible.

All applicants will be required to complete an application. This comprises:

• a completed application form
• an artist’s statement of no more than 150 words in word or PDF format. A C.V. in word or PDF format
• 4 jpeg images of four original works by the artist. These should be no larger than 1 MB each. Each image should be of a separate work and should include title, medium, and dimensions in cm, year and price for sale. Each jpeg file should be titled with artist’s full name.
• an entry fee of ₤15 payable by Stripe. Use your full name for reference on payments.

By submitting an application, the entrant promises that all of the information comprised in the application is correct. The entrant also promises to comply with these rules and any other competition requirements specified by ColArt (whether on its website or otherwise) and ColArt reserves the right to exclude any entry which in its opinion does not comply.

Only one entry per person is permitted. All applications must be made through the APPLY page of the Griffin Art Prize website. No hard copy applications will be accepted. Proof of submission is not proof of receipt. Applications plus payment must be received by the closing date specified. No responsibility can be accepted for entries which are incomplete, delayed, damaged, wrongly delivered or not received for whatever reason.

Paintings submitted should be no larger than 2.5m x 3m and should have been completed since 2014. The paintings must be entirely the entrant’s original idea and creation and they must not infringe someone else’s copyright or other intellectual property rights. The submission must be lawful, it must not be offensive, obscene, racist, insulting, discriminating or otherwise objectionable and it must not contain any form of advertising.

Entrants grant ColArt the unrestricted right (without royalty) to reproduce images of submitted artworks in any publication in connection with the Griffin Art Prize.

The jury’s decision is final. If ColArt is unable to contact any short-listed artist or winner via the email address supplied by the entrant, the short-list position / prize lapses and ColArt reserves the right to select alternative winners.

Long- listed and short-listed artists will be contacted directly. The names of the winner and short listed artists will be published on Facebook and elsewhere in competition publicity.

Paintings submitted for exhibition must be available until December 15th 2017.

There may be room for-short listed artists to negotiate the work they will exhibit in the short list exhibition but it is in the discretion of ColArt whether to accept any works other than those listed in the application.

The artist will be responsible for delivery and collection of artworks for the short-list selection and exhibition, also for insurance whilst in transit. ColArt will be responsible for insurance of artworks whilst onsite.

By entering this competition, all entrants agree to receive marketing information from the supporting brands, namely, Winsor & Newton and Liquitex.

The short-listed artists and the winner are expected to sign agreements governing the conditions applicable to the short-list exhibition and residence respectively and ColArt reserves the right to remove the artist from the short-list or withdraw the winner’s prize if the relevant agreement is not signed.

In all matters arising in connection with the competition, ColArt’s decision shall be final.

No cash alternative is available.

The entrant will be liable for any reasonably foreseeable loss or damage suffered by ColArt arising from the artist’s breach of this agreement.

ColArt reserves the right to cancel this competition or alter these rules if it considers that it has good reason to do so.

These rules are governed by English law and any disputes will be decided only by the courts of the United Kingdom.
