Elizabeth Catlett, Black Unity, 1968

“I have always wanted my art to service black people—to reflect us, to relate to us, to stimulate us, to make us aware of our potential,” said Elizabeth Catlett, the American sculptor and printmaker behind this striking mahogany sculpture of a raised fist from 1968, titled Black Unity. Catlett used her work to advocate for civic and social change—particularly with regards to the Civil Rights movement—in both the U.S. and Mexico, where she lived for much of her adult life.
