Ella Kruglyanskaya, Lemon, Peel, Milk, 2020

Latvian artist Ella Kruglyanskaya creates exuberant large-scale paintings and drawings populated by cartoonishly stylized women or inanimate objects—or sometimes both, as per this female figure surrounded by her (somewhat peculiar) snacks of choice: a chic mug of spilt milk, a banana and half a lemon. Kruglyanskaya uses art historical conventions to investigate and reimagine female representation, with gently comic results. “I’m interested in pictorial events that are not narrative but visual and sometimes aspire to an unspoken punch line,” she has said. You can see a new exhibition of her cheery work (including this one) online at Thomas Dane Gallery now.
