Emilio Ambasz, Residence-au-Lac, 1983

It’s very difficult to source information on this remarkable installation by Argentine architect and industrial designer Emilio Ambasz. However, it appears that it featured in the the lobby of the Residence-au-Lac, a hotel once described as “an incongruous bit of Miami Beach modernism on the shore of Lake Lugano in Switzerland”. The hotel itself was built in the 1950s, while Ambasz made his additions—the lobby and terrace—in the early eighties. Ambasz, an early pioneer of sustainable architecture, is best known for his work with green spaces and buildings. This undulating design, on the other hand, resembles a sort of nighttime desertscape, showcasing his dedication to natural form and his famous appreciation for imagination.
