In the current issue of Elephant, we present our latest art crushes, spanning Gucci bags through pop culture-inspired candles. Also included is @folkartoutsiderart, an Instagram feed devoted to the work of intuitive, self-taught artists. One such artist is the Mississippi-born former share cropper and cook, Emitte Hych (1909-2009), author of a number of evocative drawings and paintings. These depicted “simple whimsical scenes of people, snakes, elephants and imaginary plants”, according to the Pardee Collection—as evidenced in this evocative, untitled and undated painting of a hands-free rider.
