Emma Fineman, Why Is It So Hard To Stay In Present Time, 2017

Midweek meanderings by Emma Fineman, courtesy of her 2017 work, Why Is It So Hard To Stay In Present Time. The US-born artist “works strictly from memory”, explains Ravi Ghosh in a 2020 feature on Fineman’s evocative oeuvre, something that enables her “to explore not only the relationship between object and representation, but also between object, perception and representation—encouraging slippages, discrepancy and multi-dimensionality in her work in pursuit of authenticity.” Fineman views painting and drawing as a “visual language”, wielding oil bar or charcoal as writers would a pen—to truly expressive, almost diaristic effect.
