Would you sign up for a stay in a former sandstone mine? If the spot in question was this expertly converted space by Madrid-based architects Ensamble Studio, our answer would definitely be yes. Completed in 2020, the project saw Ensamble founders Anton Garcia Abril and Débora Mesa transform the hollowed-out rock formation in Menorca into a simple yet poetic dwelling, with a hammock and mattresses atop sandstone bases for sleeping, and a pool for relaxation. “Our goal was to touch the space gently,” said Mesa. “To add the necessary elements to make it inhabitable, and therefore preserve it and give it new meaning and new life.”
