Eric Ravilious, Chalk Paths, 1935

A serene scene to kickstart Monday, by British painter, designer, book illustrator and wood engraver Eric Ravilious. Painted in 1935, this deftly rendered watercolour depicts the Sussex Downs, where white chalk paths line the lush hillscapes. The Downs was a favourite subject for Ravilious, who would set off at dawn to commit its views to paper. He would later describe the area as having had a marked impact on his approach to painting because “the colour of the landscape was so lovely and the design so beautifully obvious”.
