Esmay Wageman’s obsession with materiality and the human body has led to a practice that encompasses uncanny hyperrealistic sculpture, gelatinous body adornments and high fashion elements—all of which build an aesthetic that points to a gender-fluid sci-fi fantasy. She has worked with recording artists such as Solange and Sevdaliza, and forms part of a group show taking place at Galeria Melissa in London, as part Forever Now, a collective brought together by Dazed Beauty editor Nellie Eden (until 25 May) which opens with a performance by Shygirl this evening (who will be wearing a Wageman creation). It coincides with the relaunch of the nostalgia-heavy Possession “jelly shoe”, which Wagemans has also reconceived for the show.
