A warming mountainscape to see out November, by Lebanese artist and writer Etel Adnan, who passed away earlier this month at the age of 96. Adnan was born in Beirut in 1925 and studied philosophy in Paris, where she established herself as a poet and essayist. She moved to California in the 1950s, thereafter taking up painting for the first time. Adnan’s small-scale landscapes are mini masterclasses in geometry and colour combination, created using a palette knife rather than a paint brush to achieve “tessellated blocks of pure colour” (Mudam).
