This year marks the fortieth anniversary of The Memphis Group, those Italian masters of postmodern design and architecture. To celebrate, Saint Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello has created a capsule clothing collection inspired by the group’s “ultra-graphic, playful and colourful” furniture designs. This includes the acclaimed Carlton room divider by Ettore Sottsass, a multicoloured bookshelf-slash-cabinet, rendered in plastic laminate, with an iconic, almost anthropomorphic form. You can see the piece in person, alongside other seminal Memphis Group designs and Vaccarello’s new collection, at a special exhibition open from 19 May to 23 June in both the Paris and Los Angeles Saint Laurent Rive Droite stores.
