Gabriel Lester, Melancholia in Arcadia, 2011

A Monday breath of fresh air by Dutch artist Gabriel Lester. This peaceful installation formed part of I Am Not a Studio Artist, the very first exhibition held at acclaimed Istanbul art institution SALT in 2011. The piece, made up of two billowing curtains that have been chemically stiffened to freeze them in time, echoes a series of photographs of the same subject taken in Odessa, Ukraine by Lester’s late friend Huseyin Bahri Alptekin. “The work refers to the gesture of opening the windows to set free the soul of the deceased,” Lester explains, “[and] the idea of a spirit mysteriously lifting the curtains to reveal its presence.”
