Gideon Appah, Portrait of Uncle Koffi, Abena, 2019

Hands up if your Sunday plans look something like this. This insouciantly cool duo were painted by the Ghanaian artist Gideon Appah, known for his “mystical landscapes and dreamlike narratives (to quote Mitchell-Innes & Nash, New York, who are currently hosting an exhibition of the painter’s work), which are informed by life in the capital city of Accra, and rendered in thickly applied pigment and evocative hues. As pictured here, many of Appah’s figurative works are strikingly intimate, drawing on his own experiences and offering viewers “a glimpse inside a sensual, private moment where joy or ecstasy is experienced—something we all need more of right now.
