The term “high seas” might evoke images of swashbuckling pirates and ancient voyages, but it is in fact an official term for the vast swathes of ocean that do not fall under any national jurisdiction. These vital bodies of water play a huge part in absorbing heat from manmade climate change, but their unique biodiversity is under threat due to industrial-level fishing and deep-sea mining. To raise awareness, Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE) ambassador Anthea Hamilton is staging an exhibition at her London studio, bringing together thirty-six artists who have reflected upon the marvels of the ocean in a variety of ways. They include Ginny Pavry’s beautiful cyanotypes, Hamish Mackie’s enormous ammonite sculpture and Hamilton’s own meditations on the blue horizon.
